PCI played a critical role in supporting the restoration and seismic improvement of the historic Suzzallo Library at the University of Washington, a landmark known for its Gothic architecture and intricate architectural details. As part of the $21.5 million project, PCI’s scaffold team designed and erected an access system to facilitate upgrades while protecting the library’s fragile, century-old materials and maintaining safe public access around the occupied building.
The project presented numerous challenges, including deteriorating masonry, sensitive historic surfaces, limited staging space, ongoing pedestrian traffic, and work around irreplaceable stained-glass windows and decorative stonework. Through close collaboration with the project engineer, architect, and GC, PCI adapted to changing conditions and developed efficient solutions to support multiple façade work zones while maintaining schedule and budget goals.
The team also utilized a mechanical hoist system, implemented rigorous safety practices, and achieved a 95% pass rate on engineered wall-tie anchor pull tests, helping to enhance project efficiency and minimize delays. Despite the complexity of working at height around towers, arches, and historic architectural features, PCI completed both scaffold phases with zero safety incidents and no property damage.
