With 320,000 SF of terminal space and four new gates, Terminal E at Boston Logan International Airport added the much-needed extra capacity the city required, but it also added another memorable landmark to the city’s skyline. The terminal’s iconic “Boston Red” roof—said to resemble both a boomerang and a spaceship, depending on your perspective—helped the facility instantly became an admired and awarded project in both the aviation and construction industries.
When the project started, PCI LYMO was chosen as a key partner in what would become a multi-year design-assist effort. The project’s exceptional scale and complex geometry required precise alignment of the custom curved panels across the entire structure, all of which would be supplied and installed by the PCI LYMO team.

The aluminum composite rainscreen panels were designed and fabricated in PCI LYMO’s New England facility and delivered to the terminal job site for installation. The team installed over 237,000 SF of cladding on the structure, clocking nearly 90,000 work hours along the way.
According to PCI Senior Estimator, Kyle Gagne, PCI LYMO provided a dedicated, full-time survey crew throughout the duration of the project to support coordination among all trades.
“Collaboration on the Terminal E project began in the design-assist process where all key trades were involved,” said Gagne. “The different teams were willing to work together to resolve project challenges, and this proved critical in maintaining the accuracy and alignment required by the building’s complex design.”
The dedicated trade alignment plan helped ensure that the terminal project was completed on time; Terminal E opened in time for holiday travel in November 2023.
The design team’s focus on sustainable building initiatives earned the terminal LEED Platinum certification by U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). Since the terminal’s completion, the project has been awarded for a variety of industry honors (listed below), including being named the 2024 Best Airport/Transit Project by ENR New England and the American Architecture Awards.
