Safety is a Lifestyle, Not a Checklist.

A Culture of Excellence at PCI

By Dakota Simmons & Scott Webber

At PCI, safety is much more than a protocol. It is woven into our DNA. We believe that safety is a lifestyle rather than a mere checklist. This philosophy drives our daily operations across the Northeast.

A Tradition of Continuous Learning

Our commitment to safety starts with comprehensive education. We achieve this through initiatives like PCI Safety University. This annual national program brings together all our operations leadership members from each product line and safety professionals from across the country. The goal is to align everyone across the organization on updates within the company and within our industry. The company invests heavily in getting the right people into the training sessions. Bringing the knowledge back to branches and the job sites ensures that every employee stays on the same page.

Between national sessions, we maintain momentum through regional training. This keeps our local site safety teams up to date on regional needs. No one attends these sessions simply to check a box. We are going to learn. We bring firm knowledge back to our branches so everyone knows what our focus areas are and the improvements that are being made so that we can achieve our company’s number one core value – Safety.

Empowering Every Individual

Safety is a shared responsibility. It does not only land on the shoulders of the safety department. At PCI, safety begins with the operations leadership of each product line. Our safety professionals act as resources. However, we empower every team member to find their own solutions. We encourage our team members to think critically and take proactive ownership of safety.

Award-Winning Performance

This lifestyle approach produces tangible results. We relentlessly pursue a Target Zero mindset within the branches. We encourage our employees to think of their WHY when working day to day, even outside of the workplace, because safety doesn’t stop when they leave the site. Our dedication shows in our numbers. We currently maintain an Experience Modification Rate (EMR) of .42 within the company, which is an excellent rate given over 50 million hours worked in the previous three years.

In 2022, the Albany and New England Interior branch won the Kenneth M. Spraetz (KMS) Safety Achievement Award. The KMS Award is named after one of PCI’s first presidents and is our company’s highest safety honor. The company reserves it for branches that show an unwavering commitment to a safety-first culture. In 2025, the Albany branch also won the Northeast Subcontractors Association Safety Award. Recently, PCI also earned recognition as a 2024 NIA Safety Excellence Award winner. This validates our efforts to protect our most valuable asset. And that asset is our people.

Leading the Way on Site

Our customers feel the impact of this culture. We work in complex environments. We also work in high-tech semiconductor facilities. In both areas, the feedback remains consistent. PCI exudes responsibility for safety on the job site. Our partners often look to us to help set the standard.

By making safety a lifestyle, we ensure that every person returns home safely. This is not just about following policies. It is not just about preventing jobsite failure. It is about Protecting Our Why. It is about making sure nobody gets hurt. At PCI, we do it the right way every time.
