When Grant Goodman started with Performance Contracting, he had no experience in construction.
But what he did have was a decade worth of experience working with non-profit organizations and teaching high school students. This helped him fit into the estimator role, a role that requires someone to meet with internal and external partners regularly.
“Estimating requires well-rounded people, and I enjoy the challenges of the role for my personal growth,” Grant commented.
The most rewarding part of the role for Grant is something unique to estimating for a subcontractor like Performance Contracting:
“Operating as a customer relations agent within the process of estimating has been rewarding. Majority of the people in this industry are down to earth, and the relationships I’ve formed both within the company and with clients has been gratifying.”
“Estimating is much more than clicking away behind a screen.”
Learning Along the Way
“Taking it one day at a time and learning as much as I can in each given day has really paid off,” explained Grant. “I had no prior experience within mechanical systems and insulation, so learning the technical side of things was a major lift at first.”
Those around him now would find this hard to believe, as he’s becoming more of the go-to expert every day. He credits this to the support he’s received along the way.
“If someone was interested in working for our company, I would advise that they sit down with someone from PCI and someone from another construction team and pay close attention to the support they’ve received.”
Performance Contracting prides itself on employee success and well-being, continuous improvements through ongoing education opportunities, and ongoing support systems in place for all employees.
An Underrated Role
“Estimating is much more than clicking away behind a screen,” says Grant.
“There’s an analytical aspect to estimating where a large problem is presented and you need to solve it. This requires time, attention, and dedication. But the role also requires soft skills—being able to work well with your team while being a source of support and expertise to the crews in the field and your customers.”
Grant has been in the role over two years now, and continues to learn more about the industry and company at his branch in Indianapolis.
“Taking it one day at a time and learning as much as I can each day has really paid off.”
