Soft Digging for Power Plant Construction

How does a major player in power generation and a major player in power plant construction build a new power plant beside an aging plant without shutting down the old unit? This real-world scenario came to fruition in the mountains on North Carolina.

The power plant team reached out to another major player: PCI. The real challenge for our power producer was to keep power to the grid. If not, this would affect not only customers, but also revenue streams. The professionals constructing the new power plant needed to guard against line strikes, which could potentially injure unsuspecting workers or trip a unit at the facility that remained in production. In this instance, mechanical digging was risky – soft digging offered the most protection. Soft digging involves the use of compressed air or pressurized water to disturb the soil and vacuum extraction to sculpt out excavations without destroying underlying known or unknown interferences.

With the plant seventy-seven percent (77%) complete, and with roughly five thousand yards of soil moved, there has not been a line strike where soft digging was utilized. This allowed the construction contractor and the power producer to achieve most of their construction goals with zero injuries or power outages due to line strikes. PCI completed its scope without issue and with zero accidents.

Charlotte Motor Speedway Debris Cleanup

Every job for PCI starts with someone somewhere having a need. It’s up to our professional staff to provide solutions to those needs in a manner that offers value. At Charlotte Motor Speedway, we were asked to help with a unique project. Collected and trapped between the wall and the SAFER barrier were empty aluminum cans, plastic water bottles, wrappers, cups, tire debris, and sand. The need to collect and dispose of this mixed material was imperative. If that debris were blown free during the race it could put divers, event staff, and spectators in harm’s way. Charlotte Motor Speedway has high standards when it comes to hosting fans and takes safety very seriously. And, as you might imagine, they also care about aesthetics. When we at PCI were able to help them, it was not only a pleasure but an honor.

“Our efforts, although industrious, were inefficient compared the air mover method utilized by PCI”Charlotte Motor Speedway, Track Services

PCI’s crew utilized powerful air movers to vacuum and later dispose of the debris trapped inside the spaces of the SAFER barrier wall. It’s also important to note that air movers are not true vacuums. A driven blower displaces air at a rate of more than 5000 CFM to create low pressure in the debris body of our trucks, whereby creating suction to vacuum load material. Need a consultation? Safety & Training

charlotte-training-module

Where does safety begin? Trust us, it is not a trick question. Thought-provoking; yes. PCI looks at safety through multiple facets, and safety is our top core value. So, for us and to begin answering the question: Preparation is everything. Before our industrial cleaning services teammates are allowed to mobilize to the respective job sites, PCI trains them well. For field service technicians, one portion of their training is a hands-on experience. Think “on the job training” before ever being on a customer’s site.

The container pictured is PCI’s hands-on training module. It is no ordinary container, though. Specifically designed for the high-pressure water cleaning (hydro-blasting) industry, the module contains many tangible real-world cleaning applications and scenarios. With the module, our resident experts can explain, teach, coach, and execute the safe cleaning process. During this training, our technicians learn the most basic steps to set-ups and the safety procedures to follow in each example contained within. The training is layered much like building blocks to add some of the most advanced safety skills a technician can acquire.
