Barge 138

Vigor Marine | Portland, OR | July 2017

This is the first liquefied ammonia barge built in the US since 1982. The hull was fabricated from 9,000 tons of American steel and fitted with 4,400 tons of equipment. This project took 2 years. There are four cargo tanks, each capable of holding 5,500 tons of liquid anhydrous ammonia at a very low pressure.

  • Insulated the piping on pre assembled pipe-rack modules. Once they were in place, we went back to insulate all of the joints. A difficult aspect of this project for us was that because the liquid ammonia is such a cold system, we had to completely seal all of our insulation air tight, to prevent ice build up.
